According to the EU Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Directive 1990/384/EEC.
Class I or II scales must be used for gold, silver, or other precious metals, precious
stones and jewellery. The Directive was originally implemented in the UK by the
Non-automatic Weighing Instruments (EEC Requirements) Regulations 1992.
Following various amendments new Regulations were made in 2000 (SI 2000/3236)
